Today dawned well-washed and overcast. I had no predictions as to what a day of rain might mean for birds.<\/p>\n<p>There were transects to be done\u00a0and I\u00a0met up with two companions to well, count birds. It took a while for things to get going, perhaps the day needed to warm up, but in time we were finding new species at almost every turn. It started with a <strong>Chestnut-sided Warbler<\/strong>, then <strong>Magnolia<\/strong> <strong>Warblers<\/strong>, a <strong>Ruby<\/strong>–<strong>throated<\/strong> <strong>Hummingbird<\/strong>, <strong>American<\/strong> <strong>Redstarts<\/strong>, a breathtaking <strong>Black<\/strong>–<strong>throated<\/strong> <strong>Green<\/strong> <strong>Warbler<\/strong>, a puzzling-at-first <strong>Orange<\/strong>–<strong>crowned<\/strong> <strong>Warbler<\/strong> and finally (for this little corner) a <strong>Black<\/strong> <strong>and<\/strong> <strong>White<\/strong> <strong>Warbler<\/strong>. But we couldn’t stop there, we had to keep moving, there was\u00a0much more ground to cover.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6462\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mybirdoftheday.ca\/2016\/09\/19\/northern-flicker\/dscn1817\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6462\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6462\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mybirdoftheday.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DSCN1817-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mybirdoftheday.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DSCN1817-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.mybirdoftheday.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DSCN1817-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.mybirdoftheday.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DSCN1817-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.mybirdoftheday.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DSCN1817-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Male Northern Flicker in Virginia Creepers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were many highlights to follow: <strong>Northern<\/strong> <strong>Flickers<\/strong> and <strong>Swainson\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>Thrushes<\/strong> feasting on the fruits of <strong>Virginia<\/strong> <strong>Creepers<\/strong>, <strong>Warbling<\/strong>, <strong>Red<\/strong>–<strong>eyed<\/strong> and <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong> <strong>Vireos<\/strong>, <strong>Great<\/strong>–<strong>crested<\/strong> and <strong>Least<\/strong> <strong>Flycatchers<\/strong>; Any one of these could have been my Bird of the Day. It was all about as good as it gets, and then up popped a <strong>Wilson\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>Warbler<\/strong>, just long enough to make us gasp.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that Wilson\u2019s Warblers are particularly rare, but we sure don\u2019t see many, they pay us brief visits on their way to and from Ontario\u2019s far north and their Mexico wintering home. The Orange-crowned Warblers are probably less common, certainly easy to overlook. But what Wilson\u2019s have that Orange-crowned don\u2019t is visual impact; a shallow measure I\u2019ll admit but it stopped us dead in out tracks.
